Four short lessons that walk you through every feature of the builder — from your first sounding to a shareable, citable section.

Open the Builder

1. Builder essentials

Get oriented and drop in your first section in under a minute.

    Load a sample

    Open the Builder and click Load sample. Four demo VES soundings appear with topography and distance spacing already enabled — perfect for exploring the controls.

    Pick the environment

    Set Default lithology environment to Basement or Sedimentary. Every new layer is auto-classified from its resistivity using this preset.

    Toggle topography & distance

    Above the column list, switch Topography line and Use distance spacing on or off. Distance spacing places columns at their true profile chainage instead of evenly.

    Adjust section depth

    The Section depth (m) input caps how deep the panel draws. The Builder auto-fits depth when you add data; raise it if your deepest layer is being clipped.

Tip — Everything is saved in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Clearing browser data clears your work.

2. Import & custom lithology

Bring in your own VES data and define rock units that match your site.

    Add a manual column

    Click + Add column. Give the sounding a name, elevation and distance, then enter each layer's thickness (m) and resistivity (Ω·m). The last layer is treated as a half-space.

    Import an Excel file

    Click Import Excel. The dialog shows the exact columns expected (name, elevation, distance, thickness, resistivity). You can paste from a spreadsheet — one row per layer.

    Add a custom lithology

    Open + Custom lithology, name your unit, choose a colour, and set a resistivity range. It becomes selectable from every layer dropdown and shows up in the legend.

Tip — Custom lithologies are also stored locally — share them by sending colleagues a share link, which includes them inline.

3. Visualise & edit

Read the correlation panel and override any auto-classified layer.

    Read the panel

    Each column shows resistivity-derived lithology, with topography (if enabled) drawn across the top. The depth axis is shared across all columns.

    Re-assign a layer

    Below the panel, the Layer lithology list lets you change any layer's rock type via a dropdown. The section and legend update instantly.

    Re-order or remove columns

    In the Columns grid, tweak each station's elevation/distance or delete it with the trash icon. The section re-renders live.

4. Export, share, cite

Get your section out — for a paper, report, or a quick share.

    Export PNG

    Click Export PNG for a high-resolution image suitable for slides and publications. A short citation reminder appears the first time.

  2. 2

    Export Excel

    Export Excel writes your soundings back to a spreadsheet — handy as a project backup or to hand to a collaborator.

  3. 3

    Share a link

    Share link copies a URL that encodes the entire section (columns, lithologies, toggles). Anyone who opens it sees the exact same panel.

    Print or cite

    Use Print for a clean printable view. Visit the Cite page for ready-made APA, BibTeX and RIS entries — please cite GeoSection if you use it in publications.
